It has been almost a month since over 3,700 persons who were recruited on contract for Tamil Nadu’s health department were told their services were no longer required. While their protests at being made redundant were vehement, when they did enter, they were fully aware that contractual recruitments come with a clause. Even as 100s of contractual employees continue to demand for “equal pay for equal work” in the State, is recruitment on ‘contract basis’ the answer to the manpower needs of the government health sector?
